Charlotte Mayoral Primaries Too Close To Call. So What Does That Mean For Voters?

The Charlotte Mayoral Primary race held September 15, 2015 was too close to call. Jennifer Roberts won majority vote for Democrats with 36%; however, she failed to reach the 40% required to solidify her nomination to run against the confirmed Republican nominee Edwin B. Peacock III, in the General Election. This conundrum requires another Primary Election to confirm a Democratic nominee. This means the race continues for Jennifer Roberts, and Dan Clodfelter.

It can be a bit confusing. Here is a little more information. The Mayoral race has two election cycles or voting opportunities to chose the individual who will  ultimately become Mayor. The first, is the Primary Election. This voting cycle is crucial, because as a Democrat, Republican, or Independent voter, you chose the candidate that will represent your party in the final election, the ‘General’.  The individual candidate from each party that garners required votes to win in the Primary Election, will then run in the General Election as the nominee or representative for their party in the race for Mayor. In the event a candidate for a party fails to obtain votes required to synch the nomination, this is considered a ‘Runoff’, and a second Primary Election for that party will occur to determine who will run in the General Election. The winner of the General Election earns the title as Mayor.

Featured Candidate: Jennifer Roberts

So, what does this mean for voters? Well, if at first you don’t succeed, try again. That’s right, Democrats need to head back to the polls October 6, 2015 for a second Primary vote to ensure their candidate is the last man, or woman standing in the final race to the Mayoral seat. General Elections, or final voting cycle for this race will be held November 3, 2015, and will determine Charlotte’s next Mayor. Revisiting the polls is a small price to pay for such an important election. Happy voting Citizens!
