Full Executive Action Speech Gun Control
On January 5, 2016 our President, Barrack Obama addressed the nation with his ‘Executive Action’ plan for Gun Control to answer the people’s cries to curtail the violence associated with guns in America. The pain in the President’s face rallied the sentiment felt across America, enough. He understood government inaction to mass shootings and gun violence across America that has become an epidemic, is unacceptable. Political partisan divide should no longer take precedence over a citizen’s fundamental right to feel safe under the protection of a free democracy. The President quoted Dr. Martin Luther king Jr. “We need to feel the fierce urgency of now”.
Thank you Mr. President for delineating between our constitutional right to bear arms, and responsible gun purchase that supports background checks across suppliers offering the sale or trade of firearms. Thank you for responding to the voice of the people. Quinnipiac University polls showing 95% Democrats and 87% Republican citizens support background checks on gun purchases at gun shows or online, confirming we are in this together as a nation and should reject any efforts to draw a wedge between the issue with confusion of rights verses responsibility. Clearly we still have a way to go in curtailing gun violence in America. The President’s Executive Action plan gives us hope things can be better.
What The Executive Action Will Do:
- Enforce license, background checks for gun buyers
- Improve background check system
- Clarify rules for reporting lost or stolen guns
What The Executive Action Won’t Do:
- Require background checks for every gun sale
- Ban gun sales to people on “No-fly” list
- Ban large capacity magazines
