PEOPLE’S ‘CLIMATE MARCH’ HELD ON THE 100TH DAY OF TRUMP’S PRESIDENCY

People’s Climate March on Washington, DC was held on the 100th day of Trump’s presidency, Saturday April 29th, 2017.  Among other reasons, people came out to protest against the current Republican Administration’s environmental policies, that many feel reflect a dangerous lack of understanding of the serious potential impact of Climate Change, stemmed from an overwhelming member majority’s disbelief in science. In addition, Trump and his Administration’s reckless reversal of regulations put in place by the Obama Administration to protect the environment, have the potential for dire consequences to our planet’s resources, it’s citizens, and the country’s economic stability. In a press conference held in March, 2017 Trump boasted, “My administration is putting an end to the war on coal”. Further stating, he is taking steps to “Reverse government intrusions“, namely environmental protections. Referencing his plans to “lift” Obama’s regulations on the coal industry, seemingly for the all mighty dollar.

The Climate March was a huge success. Crowds came out in record number to protest, and make their voices heard. Andrew Logan @Lgnsnd captured a great view, and shared with Twitter. According the a Huffington Post Article, in addition to the main March in Washington, DC, there were more than 300 marches across the United States, and around the world. People’s Climate shared a tweet for why they march, “To change everything, it takes everyone! TODAY, we march for climate, jobs and justice!” Some citizens used this opportunity as a reminder, their team Hillary Clinton. Flaunting signs ‘I’m With Her’, as if to make a statement, such a march would not be necessary if she were ‘Commander In Chief”. One sign pictured an image of earth next to the phrase ‘I’m With Her’. An obvious reference to ‘Mother Earth’, and Hillary. Pun intended. While others wanted to make it clear, this is not about party. Displaying signs with the statement ‘Republican or Democrat, Air Don’t Care’.

A DC resident joined the March to highlight concerns with fair housing, that should require a safe and healthy living environment. People’s Climate shared a video tweet, and a statement from a protester, “We are fighting for fair housing in D.C.” – Schyla.

Other Climate March protesters showed up outside of one of President Trump’s hotels, offering a descriptive assessment of the members of his administration, with a collective message in the form of a chant “No Trump, No KKK, No fascist USA”.

Protest and other forms of citizen engagement, has been building and is on the rise since Trump, and a majority Republican Congress took office. Perhaps, feeling the frustration, that legislation is leaning to one side, leaving an entire section of the population unprotected, as it were or voiceless. Protest such as the highly successful Women’s March, March For Science, and ‘Moral March’, to name a few, have given citizens a voice and will not likely slow down any time soon.
